Medication Tapering: A Thoughtful Approach to Antidepressant Deprescribing

At Mendem, we understand that deciding to taper off antidepressant medication is a deeply personal choice. Whether you’re looking to transition away from medication due to side effects, a desire for a more holistic approach, or a belief that it’s time for a change, our TaperWell Service offers a structured, evidence-based approach to safe antidepressant deprescribing. Our goal is to help you transition mindfully and successfully, reducing the risk of withdrawal symptoms and ensuring long-term emotional wellness.

A Gradual, Individualized ProcessGrowth

Antidepressant tapering is not a quick process. Depending on your clinical presentation, a safe and effective taper can take anywhere from 12 to 24 months minimum. Our approach prioritizes patient safety, symptom monitoring, and holistic strategies to help maintain mood stability and minimize discomfort throughout the process. We use precision-based, step-down methods to ensure that each phase of tapering is as smooth as possible.

An Investment in Your Long-Term Wellness

While some components of our TaperWell Service are covered by insurance, others require a financial investment in your health. This includes:

  • Functional Lab Testing – Identifying nutritional deficiencies, hormonal imbalances, and inflammation that may impact mood and withdrawal symptoms.

  • Mental Health Coaching – A structured, skills-based approach to emotional regulation, mindfulness, and stress resilience.

  • Compounded Medications – If required for micro-adjustments, these are not typically covered by insurance.

Additional Health Support Requirements

Because medication tapering impacts the whole body, we require all TaperWell patients to have the following:

  • A Primary Care Provider (PCP): To oversee general medical health and ensure medical stability.

  • A Talk Therapist: Engaging in therapy is essential to provide emotional support and address any psychological concerns during the transition.

  • Dietitian Consultation (If Recommended): Depending on the severity of symptoms, nutritional guidance may be recommended to support neurochemical balance and reduce withdrawal symptoms.
