What to Expect During Your First Session
At Mendem, we understand that seeking mental health support is a big step, and we’re here to ensure your first session is a comfortable and supportive experience. Our approach is rooted in lifestyle psychiatry, integrating functional medicine principles to address mental health holistically.
Before Your Appointment
Once you schedule your first session, you’ll receive a welcome email with intake forms to complete before your visit. These forms help us understand your medical history, lifestyle, and mental health concerns. Completing them in advance ensures we can focus on you during the session.

Additionally, you will access the link for your appointment through your patient portal. Please take a moment before your session to test your device and Zoom features to ensure a smooth connection. Sessions must be conducted from a private location in Washington, D.C., Maryland, or Virginia. If you are outside these jurisdictions, you will need to cancel your appointment. Sessions cannot be conducted while driving.

For patients under 16 years old, a parent or guardian must be in the vicinity for the duration of the session.

Before the session, you are required to complete your vital sign forms. This includes measuring your blood pressure and weight. Blood pressure devices can be purchased from Amazon or local drug stores, and in many cases, HSA/FSA benefits can be used for this purchase. Make sure you get the right cuff size for your arm’s diameter; wrist cuffs are also appropriate. You will also need a scale to track your weight, except for eating disorder patients, where alternative arrangements will be discussed during your treatment planning.

During Your Session
Your initial assessment is divided into two sessions, each lasting 45–75 minutes and will include:

A Comprehensive Assessment – We’ll discuss your mental health history, current concerns, and overall well-being, including sleep, nutrition, stress levels, and physical health.

Personalized Treatment Planning – Based on our conversation, we’ll explore potential treatment paths, including therapy, functional lab testing, supplement recommendations, and lifestyle modifications.

Goal-Setting – Together, we’ll create an individualized care plan that aligns with your needs and values, helping you take the first step toward lasting mental wellness.

After Your Session
At the end of your second session, we will discuss your follow-up care plan, which may include:

Supplement or functional lab testing recommendations

Therapy or coaching referrals (if applicable)
