Serving as a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) from 2011 to October 13, 2020, was one of the most impactful and meaningful roles in my professional journey. During these years, I realized that my calling extended beyond acute medical care—I was destined to serve a greater purpose by supporting survivors on their ongoing journey to healing. Today, I proudly provide holistic, trauma-informed psychiatric care to survivors across Washington, DC, Maryland, and Virginia.
What Does a SANE Do?
A Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner is a specially trained registered nurse who provides immediate medical care, forensic examinations, emotional support, and critical resources to individuals who have experienced sexual violence. SANEs are essential because they:
Conduct compassionate, trauma-informed forensic examinations to collect evidence in a supportive and non-judgmental manner.
Provide comprehensive medical care, including injury assessment, pregnancy prevention, and sexually transmitted infection prophylaxis.
Offer emotional support, validation, and empowerment, helping survivors feel heard, respected, and cared for during a vulnerable time.
Testify in court, providing professional and unbiased medical testimony to assist survivors seeking justice.
My Passion for Supporting Survivors
In my role as a SANE, I witnessed firsthand the strength and resilience of survivors. It fueled my passion to advocate tirelessly for survivor-centered practices and educate communities about preventing and responding to sexual violence. Today, I carry this commitment forward in my psychiatric practice, integrating my specialized knowledge to support survivors holistically.
